Windows 11 Support Now Depends on What Your Inventory Can Tell You

Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reached the end of updates on October 13. The next step is an accurate edition-and-version inventory followed by a controlled upgrade.

A support milestone that an operating-system label can hide

Microsoft’s Windows message center confirms that Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro reached the end of updates on October 13, 2026. The October monthly security update is the final one for those editions on that version. A device can still say “Windows 11” while no longer receiving the regular updates its operator expects.

Edition matters: Microsoft says 24H2 Enterprise and Education remain supported until October 12, 2027. This is a version-and-edition milestone, rather than the end of Windows 11 as a product.

Turn the asset list into an action list

Start by collecting the installed edition and version alongside device ownership, business role, and last successful update. Reconcile management records with machines that rarely connect to the corporate network. An inventory entry that has not checked in recently should become an investigation, not an assumption of compliance.

Prioritize machines running the affected editions. Assign an accountable owner and a target date to each upgrade group. Shared workstations and specialist peripherals deserve particular attention because their dependencies may be less visible than those of an ordinary office laptop.

Choose a supported path and test the work

Microsoft recommends moving affected devices to a supported release, including version 25H2 or 26H2. Choose the target using current compatibility information and your organization’s management policies.

Our practical recommendation is to pilot representative applications, authentication, printers, remote access, and backup recovery before expanding deployment. Record a recovery path and verify the result after installation. A successful installation message is useful evidence; it does not establish that the employee’s entire workflow still works.

Make lifecycle ownership routine

Use this milestone to build a recurring lifecycle review into managed IT operations. Track unsupported devices separately from devices awaiting an approved deployment window, and give exceptions an owner, an expiry date, and a documented resolution.

For business leaders, the useful question is whether the team can identify affected systems and complete a verified transition. An edition-aware inventory makes that answer concrete and turns the next support deadline into planned maintenance.
